NBN problems your provider can’t resolve?
If your NBN connection is slow, dropping out or not working – and your provider says the problem is inside your property – a private NBN technician can help.
Telecom Today diagnoses NBN, internet, cabling and Wi-Fi problems in homes, apartments and businesses across Sydney. Our registered cablers inspect the complete connection inside your premises, identify the source of the fault and explain the available repair options before work proceeds.
We can also provide a written fault report when the problem appears to be within the provider or NBN network.
When should you call a private NBN technician?
Contact Telecom Today when you are experiencing:
- Frequent NBN dropouts or an unstable connection
- Internet speeds substantially below your plan speed
- No connection, no sync or intermittent service
- An ISP advising that the fault is within your property
- A bridge tap or another internal telephone-line fault
- Old, damaged or incorrectly connected cabling
- Problems with an NBN wall socket or data point
- NBN problems in an apartment or at the building MDF
- A damaged or unsuitable lead-in cable within your property
- Poor modem positioning or Wi-Fi coverage
- Cabling work needed before an FTTP upgrade or new connection
Not every internet problem is caused by the NBN line. We separate line, cabling, modem and Wi-Fi problems so you know what is actually causing the issue.
NBN faults we diagnose and repair
Internal cabling faults
Old telephone wiring, unused sockets, loose terminations and damaged cables can reduce speed or cause dropouts – particularly on FTTN and FTTC connections.
Our technicians test the cabling inside your property, remove unwanted extensions where appropriate and repair or replace faulty sections. We can also install suitable data cabling when a wired connection would provide better reliability.
Bridge taps and unused sockets
A bridge tap occurs when additional telephone wiring branches away from the cable carrying your NBN service. This can introduce interference, reduce attainable speed and make the connection unstable.
We can locate bridge taps and other wiring irregularities, explain their effect on the service and remove or reconfigure them when permitted.
NBN sockets and connection points
A damaged, corroded or poorly terminated wall socket can cause intermittent faults. We inspect connection points and can repair, replace or relocate internal sockets where appropriate.
If you need phone services connected through your modem, we can also assist with phone-line and socket installation.
Lead-in cables
The lead-in cable connects the telecommunications network to your premises. Depending on where the fault is located, responsibility may sit with the property owner, service provider or NBN Co.
Telecom Today can inspect the cable, identify the likely fault location and complete permitted lead-in cable work. If the affected infrastructure belongs to NBN Co or your provider, we can explain the next step and document our findings.
Apartment and MDF problems
In apartment buildings, an NBN problem may originate between the building’s main distribution frame and the individual unit.
Our technicians can test the internal pathway, complete permitted MDF jumpering and help determine whether the fault should be referred to the building manager, service provider or NBN Co.
Modem, router and Wi-Fi problems
A working NBN connection can still feel slow if the modem is poorly positioned, the Wi-Fi signal is obstructed or too many devices are competing for coverage.
We test the connection separately from the wireless network. If the NBN line is working correctly, we can recommend modem placement, wired connections, mesh Wi-Fi or professionally installed wireless access points.
We work with different NBN connection types
Telecom Today can investigate problems affecting FTTP, FTTC, FTTN and HFC services.
The tests and permitted repairs depend on the connection technology and where the fault is located. Our role is to isolate the problem accurately, repair cabling and equipment within our authorised scope, and provide clear evidence when the issue needs to be escalated to your provider or NBN Co.
What happens during an appointment?
1. We discuss the symptoms
Tell us when the problem started, what your provider has said and whether the connection is slow, dropping out or completely offline.
2. We isolate the fault
We test the relevant sockets, internal cabling, modem connection and other accessible components to separate an internal fault from a provider or NBN network problem.
3. We explain the findings
Your technician will explain what was found, what can be repaired and any costs involved before additional work proceeds.
4. We repair and test
Where the problem is within our authorised scope, we complete the agreed repair and test the connection again. If the fault belongs to your provider or NBN Co, we can supply a report to support your escalation.
Private technician or NBN Co technician?
Telecom Today is an independent private cabling and telecommunications business. We are not NBN Co and cannot modify NBN-owned infrastructure without the appropriate authorisation.
A private technician is usually appropriate when:
- Your provider says the fault is inside your property
- You require internal cabling, sockets or data points
- You need a bridge tap or internal wiring fault investigated
- The connection works but your internal network or Wi-Fi does not
- You need independent testing and documentation
Contact your service provider first if there is a known area outage, your service has not been activated or the fault clearly involves NBN-owned network equipment.

Private NBN Technician FAQs
What does a private NBN technician do?
Should I contact my internet provider first?
Can a private technician repair the NBN network?
A private technician cannot perform unauthorised work on infrastructure owned by NBN Co. We can repair permitted customer-side cabling and identify faults that need to be escalated. A written report can be provided to help explain the findings to your provider.
Can you fix slow NBN speeds and dropouts?
We can diagnose internal causes of slow speeds and dropouts, including faulty cabling, bridge taps, damaged sockets, poor terminations and unsuitable internal network setups. If testing indicates that the fault is outside the property, we will explain the next step.
What is an NBN bridge tap?
A bridge tap is an additional branch of telephone wiring connected to the line carrying an NBN service. It can cause interference, reduced speed and frequent dropouts, particularly on FTTN and FTTC connections. A registered cabler can test for and remove unnecessary branches where appropriate.
Do you work with FTTP, FTTC, FTTN and HFC?
Yes. We can investigate internal cabling and connection problems affecting FTTP, FTTC, FTTN and HFC premises. The available repairs depend on the connection type, the location of the fault and who owns the affected equipment.
Can you help with an NBN problem in an apartment?
Yes. Apartment faults can involve cabling between the building MDF and the individual unit, internal sockets, jumpering or equipment inside the apartment. We can test the accessible pathway and advise whether the next step involves private repairs, strata, the provider or NBN Co.
Can you relocate my NBN box or modem?
We can install or relocate permitted internal cabling, data points and modem connections. Relocating an NBN-owned connection box or NTD depends on the connection type and applicable NBN requirements. A technician can inspect the installation and explain what is permitted.
Can you improve my Wi-Fi as well as my NBN connection?
Yes. We test the internet connection and Wi-Fi network separately. If the NBN line is operating correctly, we can recommend better modem placement, wired data points, mesh Wi-Fi or wireless access points.
Are your technicians registered cablers?
Yes. Telecom Today operates under ACRS Master Cabler Licence A043028. Cabling work is completed within the technician’s registration and authorised scope.
How much does an NBN technician cost?
The cost depends on the testing required, the fault location and any repair or cabling work involved. Telecom Today will explain the findings and costs before proceeding with additional work.
Which parts of Sydney do you service?
Telecom Today services homes and businesses across Sydney, including the CBD, Inner West, Eastern Suburbs, Northern Beaches, North Shore, Western Sydney, Parramatta, Hills District, St George, Sutherland Shire and surrounding areas.
Will I receive a fault report?
A report can be provided with the technician’s diagnosis and findings. This can be useful when testing indicates that the fault should be escalated to your internet provider or NBN Co.
