Choosing an NBN plan used to mean comparing a handful of familiar options such as NBN 25, NBN 50 and NBN 100. That is no longer the complete picture.
Faster wholesale plans are now available for eligible Fibre to the Premises and Hybrid Fibre Coaxial connections, including 500 Mbps, 750 Mbps, approximately 1000 Mbps and even 2000 Mbps download options.
However, choosing the biggest number is not always the best decision. Your NBN technology, provider, upload requirements, home network and Wi-Fi coverage can all affect whether you receive any practical benefit from a faster plan.
This guide explains the current NBN speed tiers and how to choose one that suits the way your household or business actually uses the internet.
Speed profiles and availability in this guide are current as at August 2026. Retail providers may use different plan names and may not offer every NBN wholesale speed profile.
What is an NBN speed tier?
An NBN speed tier is a wholesale download and upload speed profile made available to internet providers.
Your internet provider then packages the wholesale service into a retail plan. This means the plan names, prices, included equipment and speeds advertised by different providers may vary even when the underlying NBN speed profile is similar.
A plan described as “NBN 500”, for example, generally refers to a wholesale profile with a maximum download speed of 500 megabits per second. It does not mean every device will continuously receive exactly 500 Mbps.
Actual performance can be affected by:
- Your NBN connection technology
- The network capacity purchased by your provider
- Busy-period congestion
- The quality and configuration of your router
- Wi-Fi signal strength and interference
- Internal phone and data cabling
- The capabilities of your device
- The server or online service you are accessing
Download speed and upload speed
NBN plans normally display download speed first and upload speed second.
A 500/50 plan therefore has a wholesale headline speed of up to 500 Mbps downloading and 50 Mbps uploading.
Download speed affects activities such as:
- Streaming television and video
- Loading websites
- Downloading games and software
- Receiving large files
- Using multiple devices simultaneously
Upload speed affects:
- Video calls
- Sending large work files
- Cloud backups
- Uploading photographs and videos
- Remote access
- Security cameras storing footage online
- Live streaming and content creation
Upload speed is easy to overlook. Someone working with large cloud files or regularly uploading video may benefit more from a plan with better upload performance than from one offering only a larger download number.
Mbps and MB/s are not the same
Internet plans are advertised in megabits per second, written as Mbps. File sizes are commonly displayed in megabytes or gigabytes.
There are eight bits in one byte, so a 100 Mbps connection does not download a file at 100 megabytes per second. The theoretical conversion would be about 12.5 megabytes per second before allowing for network overhead and other real-world factors.
This difference explains why the download rate shown by your computer may appear considerably lower than the number in your plan’s name.
Current fixed-line NBN speed tiers
The following are the main residential fixed-line wholesale profiles currently shown by NBN Co. Availability depends on the property’s NBN technology and the plans offered by participating providers.

The figures above are wholesale maximum profiles, not guaranteed speeds on every device.
FTTN and FTTB services may have lower achievable speeds because part of the connection uses copper cabling. NBN currently describes Home Standard on these technologies as having a wholesale download range of 25–50 Mbps and an upload range of 5–20 Mbps. Home Fast I may range from 25–100 Mbps downloading and 5–20 Mbps uploading.
FTTC Home Fast I services may have a wholesale download range of 50–100 Mbps with up to 20 Mbps uploading.
The higher 500, 750, approximately 1000 and 2000 Mbps fixed-line tiers are currently available through participating providers on eligible FTTP and HFC connections.

Which NBN speed tier should you choose?
There is no single correct plan for every household. Start by considering what happens during the busiest hour of your day—not simply the total number of devices connected to the router.
A smart light that sends a small amount of data has very different requirements from a television streaming in 4K, a gaming console downloading an update or a computer uploading a large cloud backup.
NBN 12: minimal internet use
A 12/1 Mbps plan is designed for very light use.
It may be sufficient for basic browsing, email and phone services, but the limited upload speed and overall capacity can become restrictive when several devices or modern online services are used together.
For most connected households, this tier leaves little spare capacity.
NBN 25: light-use households
A plan offering up to 25 Mbps may suit one or two people who primarily browse websites, use email, make occasional video calls and stream on a limited number of devices.
It can become congested when high-resolution streaming, large downloads, cloud backup and video calls occur at the same time.
NBN 50: a practical starting point for many homes
A 50 Mbps plan can provide a sensible balance for small and medium households with ordinary streaming, remote work and general internet use.
It may be sufficient where:
- Only a few people are online simultaneously
- Most streaming takes place on one or two televisions
- Large downloads are occasional
- Upload requirements are moderate
- The home network and Wi-Fi are properly configured
Busy households can still exhaust a 50 Mbps connection when multiple high-bandwidth activities occur at once.
Plans offering up to 100 Mbps
An up-to-100 Mbps service can provide more breathing room for multiple streams, remote work, gaming downloads and larger households.
Availability and achievable performance depend heavily on the NBN technology. On FTTN and FTTB connections, line length and copper condition can limit the maximum speed. FTTC services can also have technology-specific limitations.
Eligible FTTP and HFC customers may instead find that providers now offer an accelerated 500 Mbps product where older plan structures previously offered 100 Mbps.
NBN 500: high-capacity household use
The current 500/50 wholesale tier is intended for eligible FTTP and HFC premises.
It can be useful for:
- Large households with several simultaneous users
- Multiple 4K streams
- Rapid game and software downloads
- Frequent cloud backups
- Working with large files
- Homes combining work, entertainment and connected devices
A 500 Mbps plan will not automatically improve coverage in rooms with poor Wi-Fi. The router, device and local network must be capable of delivering the extra speed.
NBN 750: very high simultaneous demand
The 750/50 tier provides additional download capacity for eligible FTTP and HFC premises.
It may suit households where several people regularly stream, download large files, use cloud gaming or work online simultaneously. The practical difference between 500 and 750 Mbps may be less noticeable for ordinary browsing or a single television.
Choose it because the household genuinely needs the extra capacity—not simply because it has a larger number in the plan name.
NBN 1000: power users and content-heavy households
Home Ultrafast currently provides a wholesale download speed of approximately 1000 Mbps and upload speed of up to 100 Mbps on eligible FTTP and HFC connections.
It can benefit:
- Content creators
- Households regularly moving very large files
- Multiple heavy users
- Extensive cloud storage and backup
- Large game and software downloads
- Advanced home networks with capable hardware
A standard Wi-Fi connection or older device may not reach anything close to the full plan speed. Wired testing is particularly important when evaluating an ultrafast plan.
NBN 2000: a specialised multi-gigabit option
Home Hyperfast provides a wholesale headline speed of up to 2000 Mbps downloading. Its wholesale upload profile is up to 200 Mbps on FTTP and up to 100 Mbps on HFC.
This tier is unlikely to be necessary for an average household. It is aimed more towards very high simultaneous demand, professional file transfers, content production and advanced home networks.
Receiving more than one gigabit on a single device requires compatible multi-gigabit equipment. The router, Ethernet ports, switches, network adapters and cabling all need to support the required speed.
A device connected through a one-gigabit Ethernet port cannot demonstrate the full performance of a two-gigabit plan.
Check your NBN technology before choosing
Not every speed tier is available on every NBN connection type.
The highest fixed-line tiers are currently associated with eligible:
- Fibre to the Premises
- Hybrid Fibre Coaxial
Connections using FTTN, FTTB or FTTC may have more variable maximum speeds because copper cabling remains part of the connection.
Before upgrading:
- Check the NBN technology available at your address.
- Ask the provider which speed profiles it offers.
- Ask about any known maximum line-speed limitation.
- Confirm whether a fibre upgrade is available.
- Check whether your existing router and network can support the proposed plan.
Paying for a higher tier does not overcome a physical line limitation.
Compare typical evening speeds
The wholesale tier is only one figure to consider. Retail providers should also advertise a typical evening speed showing the performance customers can generally expect during the busy period.
The ACCC defines the busy evening period as 7 pm to 11 pm. Its broadband speed guidance recommends comparing these realistic busy-period speeds rather than relying only on the theoretical maximum.
When comparing providers, examine:
- Typical evening download speed
- Advertised upload speed
- Any technology-specific speed warning
- Included router and its capabilities
- Contract and cancellation conditions
- Customer support
- Price after introductory discounts expire
Two plans with the same NBN tier can provide different real-world experiences.
Will a faster plan improve gaming?
A faster plan can help when downloading games and updates or when other people are heavily using the connection. It does not automatically reduce gaming latency or ping.
Gaming performance can also be influenced by:
- Distance to the game server
- The provider’s routing
- Wi-Fi interference
- Network congestion
- Other household traffic
- Router configuration
- Packet loss or an unstable line
A stable wired connection on a moderate speed tier can provide a better gaming experience than an ultrafast plan used over weak or congested Wi-Fi.
A faster NBN plan does not fix poor Wi-Fi
Your NBN speed describes the service delivered to the property. Wi-Fi is the local wireless connection between your router and devices.
If a computer beside the router performs well but devices in bedrooms or upstairs are slow, buying a faster internet plan may make little difference in those areas.
Poor Wi-Fi can be caused by:
- An unsuitable router location
- Thick walls, concrete or metal
- Interference from neighbouring networks
- An older router
- Too much distance from the router
- Poorly configured mesh equipment
- Too many devices using one wireless access point
Larger or multi-storey properties may benefit from professionally positioned wireless access points or a properly configured mesh system.
Do you need better internal cabling?
Higher speed plans place more pressure on the equipment and cabling inside the property.
Ethernet cabling can provide more consistent performance for:
- Desktop computers
- Televisions
- Gaming consoles
- Wireless access points
- Home offices
- Network storage
- Security cameras
Before replacing existing cable, have it tested. Correctly installed cabling may already support the required performance, while damaged, poorly terminated or unsuitable cable can create a bottleneck.
For permanent connections between rooms, registered data cabling installation can be more reliable than attempting to deliver every high-bandwidth service over Wi-Fi.
How to test whether your current plan is fast enough
A useful speed test should minimise unrelated limitations.
For a more meaningful result:
- Connect a capable computer to the router using Ethernet.
- Pause downloads, streaming and cloud backups on other devices.
- Disconnect any VPN.
- Confirm the computer’s network port supports the speed being tested.
- Run several tests at different times.
- Record the results, including tests during the evening.
- Compare them with your provider’s advertised typical evening speed.
A speed test performed over Wi-Fi at the far end of the property primarily tests the Wi-Fi connection. It does not reliably show the speed reaching the router.
What if you are not receiving the expected speed?
Start by checking:
- Whether there is a known outage
- Whether every device is affected
- Whether Ethernet performs better than Wi-Fi
- Whether the router requires restarting
- Whether the provider has identified a line-speed limitation
- Whether the problem occurs only during busy periods
- Whether the router, switch or device has a slower network port
- Whether old internal cabling or sockets may be affecting the connection
Contact your internet provider first if the service appears slower than the plan or repeatedly drops out. The provider can test the service and escalate an NBN network fault when appropriate.

What NBN speed is best for most households?
Many small or medium households can operate comfortably on a well-performing 50 Mbps plan. A larger or busier household may benefit from 100 Mbps or one of the accelerated 500 Mbps options, depending on its NBN technology and provider.
The best tier is the one that supports the household’s simultaneous peak use without paying for capacity that its equipment cannot deliver.
Is NBN 500 five times faster than NBN 100?
Its wholesale headline download rate is five times larger, but that does not mean every activity will feel five times faster.
Large downloads can finish significantly sooner. Ordinary browsing, email and a single video stream may feel much the same because they do not require the full capacity of either connection.
Does a higher plan improve upload speed?
Sometimes. Compare both figures carefully because download and upload increases are not always proportional. This is particularly important for cloud backup, video production, security cameras and large file uploads.
Can I receive NBN 1000 or NBN 2000 over Wi-Fi?
It may be possible to achieve very high speeds on suitable modern Wi-Fi equipment at close range, but results vary considerably. A wired connection with compatible hardware provides a more reliable way to test an ultrafast or multi-gigabit service.
Can I change NBN speed tiers later?
Generally, yes. Changes are arranged through your internet provider. Check whether changing tiers affects your contract, discounts, router payments or other fees.
Why is my speed lower than the plan name?
The plan name normally refers to a wholesale maximum profile. Your actual speed can be limited by the connection technology, provider network, busy-period demand, internal network, Wi-Fi, router, device or remote server.
Should I upgrade my plan or fix my home network?
Run a wired test first. If wired performance is close to the expected speed but Wi-Fi is poor, improve the home network before purchasing a faster plan. If the wired connection itself cannot meet a reasonable expectation, contact the provider and investigate the service or cabling.
